These sandwich roll ups are super fun to make and even more delicious to eat!
Are these the most conventional sandwiches to make? Absolutely not 🤣. But they are incredibly satisfying to whip up. Follow me…
Making Sandwich Roll Ups
If you’ve made my Grilled Cheese Roll Ups before, you’ll know exactly what’s about to happen here. For those new to rolling sandwiches, here’s what you’ll need:
- Thick Soft White Bread – This is the best variety to use to avoid the bread cracking as you roll it.
- Bread Knife – To remove the crusts. You can blitz them up and use them as breadcrumbs for another recipe!
- Rolling Pin – To flatten the bread. This ensures the bread rolls up with ease and doesn’t unravel.
- Filling – See below.
What kind of fillings to use?
You can use a variety of different fillings, my only advice is to keep it minimal. The more you stack in, the harder they’ll be to roll. Here are my 3 favourite fillings:
- Bacon – Much like a Bacon Sandwich, just crispy bacon and ketchup is all you need! Make sure your bacon is thin so the sandwich rolls properly.
- Ham & Cheese – Similar to a classic Ham & Cheese Sandwich. Here we’re just going to use finely grated cheddar, wafer-thin ham and a dash of dijon.
- Peanut Butter & Jelly – Or ‘jam’ if you’re in my neck of the woods. Make sure you’re using smooth peanut butter. Crunchy makes it difficult to roll!
Process shots: remove crusts (photo 1), roll flat (photo 2), add fillings (photos 3, 4 & 5).
Cooking Sandwich Roll Ups
When it comes to cooking the sandwiches, you’ll want to toast them in a pan with some butter. A few things to consider:
- Non-stick: Ensure you’re using a non-stick pan, otherwise you risk the roll ups sticking to the pan and unravelling.
- Seam-side: Start with the roll ups seam-side-down, just so the filling gets a chance to ‘glue’ the seam shut.
- Rotate: Gently rotate with a pair of tongs to ensure even crispiness.
The roll ups are cooked when they’re golden and visibly crisp, with the filling starting to leak out of the sides. You can make a large number of these, just don’t overcrowd the pan otherwise it gets tricky to handle with all the rotating.
Process shots: roll up sandwiches (photo 1), melt butter (photo 2), add to pan (photo 3), toast until golden (photo 4).
Serving Sandwich Roll Ups
