Well, they do say you either love it or hate it, and I’m hoping the fact you’re here means you love it! Or we have a problem on our hands ๐Ÿคฃ Follow me…

The Ultimate Marmite Sandwich

Just to quickly clear up a couple of things –

What is Marmite?

Marmite is a savoury food spread made from yeast extract.

What does Marmite taste like?

It’s got a VERY distinctive taste. It’s pungent, salty and yeasty. It’s got a thick syrupy texture and the saying is true – you either love it or hate it!

When it comes to a Marmite sandwich, growing up it’d always be small soft sandwiches, a tonne of butter and enough Marmite to make you cry. Straight in the lunch box and off I went. Today we’re taking things up a notch.

Cheese and Marmite

Cheese and Marmite is one heck of a combo, and if you haven’t tried it before your life is about to change for the better. The classic way to eat this combo is cheese on toast with Marmite. Today however, much to your surprise I’m sure, we’re doing it sandwich style.

Process shots: butter bread (photo 1), flip (photo 2), spread Marmite (photo 3), add cheese (photos 4&5), add bread butter-side-up (photo 6).

To make the sandwich you’re essentially just making a Grilled Cheese.

What Bread to use?

I love using Tiger Bread (popular here in the UK). Something fairly firm though should do the trick, like Sourdough or a White Bloomer. You want fairly thick slices too – step away from the thin soft sandwich bread!

What Cheese to use?

I use a 50/50 combo of Cheddar and Red Leicester. The Red Leicester mellows out the Cheddar nicely and adds a nice marble colour when they melt together. If you don’t have Red Leicester though just use more Cheddar. I like a fairly strong Cheddar, so the sandwich ends up pretty tangy. A mild Cheddar will allow the Marmite to shine a little more. If you only have a block of cheese you can grate it instead of using slices.

How much Marmite to use?

I LOVE Marmite, but take this from me, a little goes a long way here. I do around 2 tsp per sandwich. If you like Marmite, but only in small quantities, consider only spreading one slice per sandwich.

Can I sub Vegemite?

If you’re reading this from AUS then yep, Vegemite makes the perfect sub!

Process shots: add sandwiches to non-stick pan (photo 1), fry both sides until golden with the cheese melted (photo 2).

Serving Cheese and Marmite Sandwiches

I usually make these as a quick fix for lunch or brunch! Perfect for an after school snack too if the kids are Marmite fans.

  • Crisp/Chip Recommendation: Salt & Vinegar flavour is my favourite pairing with this sandwich!
  • Side Recommendation: This sandwich works amazingly as part of a soup and a sandwich. Roasted Tomato Soup is perfect!

Alrighty, let’s tuck into the full recipe for this cheese and marmite sandwich shall we?!

Equipment

  • Bread Knife & Chopping Board
  • Non-Stick Pan & Spatula/Turner

Ingredients

  • 4 slices of Tiger Bread (see notes)
  • 3-4 square slices of Red Leicester
  • 3-4 square slices of Cheddar
  • 4 tsp Marmite, or to taste (see notes)
  • Butter, as needed

Instructions

  • Spread one side of all of your slices of bread with butter, then flip so they're butter-side-down. Spread a thin layer of marmite over each slice (careful, a little goes a long way!) then top 2 of the slices with cheese. Place the remaining two slices on top of the cheese marmite-side-down/butter-side-up.
  • Add to a non-stick pan over medium heat and fry both sides until golden, with the cheese just starting to ooze out. Serve up and enjoy!

Notes

a) Marmite - If you've never tried Marmite before I recommend being very conservative when spreading as it is quite pungent! If you know you like it, but only in small quantities, consider just spreading one slice.ย
b) Vegemite - If you're reading this from AUS yes Vegemite is a great sub!
c) Bread - I love using Tiger Bread (very popular in the UK), but you can really use any bread you fancy. I recommend something slightly firm like a Sourdough, and slice it fairly thick. Don't use thin soft sandwich bread!
d) Cheese - If you don't have Red Leicester just sub more Cheddar. If you only have a block you can just grate it. Around 1 cup / 100g per sandwich will be enough.
e) Serve - Here I've served with Roasted Tomato Soup which goes superbly!
f) Calories - Per sandwich assuming 1 tbsp butter and 3.5oz/100g cheese per sandwich:
