The Perfect Crisp Sandwich

The mighty crisp sandwich is nothing short of a British icon, and here I’ll share with you exactly how I make mine!

If you’re outside the UK you might be slightly bewildered by today’s sandwich. In fact, there’s every chance if you ARE in the UK reading this you’re still bewildered! But, today we’re making crisp sandwiches. Yes, this is the easiest sandwich in the world, but talking unnecessarily talking in depth about sandwiches is my idea, you know this. Follow me…

Crisps

Aka potato chips for my friends across the pond. The crisps are indeed the star of the show, so it’s important to discuss the selection process.

Best crisps for a crisp sandwich

I mean who am I to choose your crisp, so first I’ll start with mine. I’ll go on record and say there’s literally no crisp variety I don’t enjoy, and in reality there’s very few crisps that don’t work well slapped between two slices of bread.

Variety

For me it’s gotta be a classic Walkers. They’ve got a light texture which work perfectly in a sarnie. A thick cut crisp like a Kettle crisp or McCoys can sometimes verge on crunchy. Crisp is what we want. Walkers are also in the category of ‘everyday crisp’. Posh crisps belong with dip. A crisp sandwich is a rough and ready option, grab what you’ve got on hand. A multipack of Walkers is always in reach. Also, one packet fills a sandwich perfectly.

Flavour

I’m usually Salt & Vinegar, sometimes Cheese and Onion, and on a rare occasion a mix of both (yes, sue me). Some people enjoy Ready Salted, and it’s not something I turn down, but it’s not my go-to. Give me flavour for heavens sake. However in general crisp flavour is something I can’t argue with, people have their favourites I am not willing to stand in the way.

Bread

This can make or break a crisp sarnie. Choose with caution.

Best Bread for a crisp sandwich

Hear me out – soft white bread, medium sliced. Let’s talk about that..

Just like posh crisps, posh bread ain’t for a crisp sandwich. Step away. From. The Sourdough. ‘Everyday’ sandwich bread is the only option. You need the soft contrast to the crisps. Sliced too thick and the crisps get lost, too thin and you’re just eating crisps. And don’t you dare toast the bread.

Let there be Butter

The 3rd and final ingredient in a crisp sandwich is butter. And do not hold back. Also, just between you and I, on some occasions I am known to trade out a slather of butter for a slather of mayo. But shhhh, that’s between you and I.

Serving a Crisp Sandwich

My hubby crushes the crisps before adding in the bread. Please don’t make those around you upset and do this. The experience is in crunching down and the crisps crushing. Ready crushed crisps is a disappointment for everyone involved.

Slice in half, not in triangles. And prepare for a shed load of crumbs.

What can I add to a Crisp Sandwich?

Things like ham and/or cheese work well, but when does a crisp sandwich stop being a crisp sandwich? Keep it simple. By all means add crisps to your savoury sandwiches, but don’t claim they’re a crisp sandwich. It’s just not fair.

Anywho, has anyone got a vacuum because we’re digging in.

Cost per serving: £1.50 / $2

Equipment

  • Bread Knife & Chopping Board
  • Knife (for butter)

Ingredients

  • 2 medium slices of Soft White Bread
  • 1 packet of Crisps (see notes)
  • Butter, as needed

Instructions

  • Liberally butter one side of each slice of bread.
  • Top on side with the crisps. Add the other slice on top, gently push down, then slice in half and enjoy.

Quick Demo

Notes

a) Bread - Medium slice is perfect. Too thick and the crisps get lost, too thin and you're just eating crisps. Make sure it's soft (stay clear of Sourdough etc).
b) Crisps - Go wild! I'm a Walker's man at heart for a crisp sandwich. Cheese & Onion most popular, but Salt & Vinegar for me.
c) Additions - Cheese works great, as does ham. But in reality, there's very few savoury sandwiches that aren't enhanced by adding in crisps!
d) Variations - Use Mayo for one slice instead of butter (cardinal sin, but oh well!). Use a roll instead of bread.

    Okay y’all,
So if you’re visiting the States and yearning for a British comfort food, snag the Lay’s potato chips. But watch out, the Salt & Vinegar flavor is in the blue bag. (My favorite)
I also have not assigned any stars to this recipe until I actually taste one of these dang sandwiches.

Hold on just a minute…I thought potato chip sandwich originated in the Deep Southern States,USA. Being an old Southern Boy myself, I cut my teeth on those sandwiches.
Over here I would guess that Lays brand…pick your flavor, but then there’s also those thick-cut kettle fried chips that are specially good for this purpose.
