Here I’ll give you some tips and tricks to making a perfect grilled cheese in the air fryer!

If you’re anything like me, when you first got your air fryer there’s nothing that wasn’t tested in there. Multiple times a day a thought bubble would appear above my head with ‘I wondered if that can be air fried?’. Well my friend, for this recipe I did the testing so you don’t have to. Follow me…

Grilled Cheese

Usual stuff here, just a couple of things to consider if it’s going in the air fryer:

Butter me up baby

A grilled cheese comes out ever so slightly more dry when made in the air fryer, so I tend to use a little more butter than I usually would. Some people swear by mayo, so you can use that if you fancy, but I’m team butter through and through.

Securing the sandwich

It’s only happened to me a couple of times, but you might find the top of the sandwich flies off when it’s in the air fryer. To prevent this, just gently press down to secure the sandwich before adding it to the air fryer.

What Cheese to use?

You can use any cheese you fancy, sliced or grated! Here I’ve used Cheddar and Mozzarella.

Process shots: slice bread (photo 1), add cheese (photo 2), add bread (photo 3), press down (photo 4), spread with butter (photo 5), flip then spread with butter (photo 6).

Air Fryer Grilled Cheese FAQ

What temperature to air fry a grilled cheese?

I find 190C/375F is the perfect temp to allow the inside to go gooey, whilst allowing the bread to crisp up perfectly.

How long to air fry for?

A total of 8 mins usually does the trick. All air fryers are different though, so just be vigilant!

Do I have to flip the sandwich half way?

You do indeed. The top will crisp up in around 5mins, but the bottom side will still be completely soft. Once you’ve flipped it the second side crisps up quicker, so another 2-3mins will be fine.

Can I make multiple grilled cheese at once?

If your air fryer is big enough then go for it! Just make sure they’re not touching or they’ll glue together.

Serving an Air Fryer Grilled Cheese

Like I mentioned earlier, air fryer grilled cheese sandwiches do come out slightly more dry than a regular grilled cheese, so I recommend serving it with a sauce/condiment or soup! (Tomato Soup or Roasted Red Pepper Soup work great).

Alrighty, let’s tuck into the full recipe for this air fried grilled cheese shall we?!

Ingredients

  • 2 medium / large slices of Bread
  • 3 - 4 square slices of Cheese (see notes)
  • Butter, as needed

Instructions

  • Add cheese to a slice of bread then place another slice of bread on top. Gently press down, then butter both sides (around 1 modest tbsp per side).
  • Place in the air fryer at 190C/375F for 5mins, or until golden on the top. Check after 30 secs - 1 min to check the top slice hasn't flew off.

  • Serve and enjoy!

Notes

a) Cheese - Use any cheese you fancy, grated or sliced! Here I've used a combo of mozzarella and cheddar. I recommend trying to keep as much of it inside the sandwich as possible, because it can sometimes burn/go chewy if it leaks too much out of the sandwich.
b) Top slice - Due to the nature of how the air fryer works, sometimes it can flip the top slice off of the sandwich. If it's going to happen it usually happens pretty quickly, so just check in the first 30 seconds or so and if it does fly off, just pop it back on and the cheese will begin to glue it shut.
c) Multiple Sandwiches - You can make more than one sandwich at a time if your air fryer fits it, just try and keep them separated so they don't glue together!
d) Timings - Different air fryers will work slightly differently, as will different sized sandwiches, so just be vigilant as you go for the first sandwich.
e) Serving - An air fryer grilled cheese comes out slightly drier than a regular grilled cheese, so I recommend serving it with a sauce/condiment or soup! (Tomato Soup or Roasted Red Pepper Soup work great).
f) Calories - per sandwich assuming 1.5 slices mozzarella, 1.5 slices cheddar and 2 tbsp butter:
